Mick Schumacher admits clinging too tightly to his F1 dream, realizing he should have planned alternative paths beyond the grid.
Mick Schumacher admits he may have “held on too tightly” to the idea of returning to the Formula 1 grid.
After losing his seat at Haas at the end of 2022, the German patiently served as Mercedes F1’s full-time reserve driver for two years.
For 2025, he has been replaced by Valtteri Bottas, with Schumacher, now 25, set to focus exclusively on his WEC driving career with Alpine.
“I decided at the age of 11 that I wanted to be in Formula 1,” Michael Schumacher’s son told Bild am Sonntag.
“It’s still my goal. F1 was and remains the dream of my life.”
“I still have unfinished business in Formula 1 and want to prove myself there once again. If an opportunity arises, I will take it.”
However, he openly acknowledges that the time has come to move on.
“I realized that in the past, I was holding on too tightly to Plan A. I should have also considered what Plans B and C would look like.”
“I’ve realized that now, and I’m happy about it.”
Schumacher added that he sees 2025 as “a chance for reorientation,” noting that “it’s good to have some distance from Formula 1.”
Still, he continued: “Everyone in Formula 1 has talent, there’s no doubt about that. But when I look at the grid, I have no doubt that I could keep up. I’m not worse than them.”
Schumacher concluded by insisting he had been “wrongly labeled” as an accident-prone driver during his two years at Haas F1.
“That significantly hurt my chances of an immediate return.”
