Mick Eyes Audi F1 Spot - May Replace Sargeant

Schumacher Set to Take Over Sargeant’s Seat at Monza

25/08/2024

Schumacher could step in for Sargeant from Monza, eyeing a pivotal Audi F1 seat opportunity.

Shortly after the door to Alpine F1 closed for Mick Schumacher, the German might indeed be poised for an immediate return to Formula 1.

James Vowles, the head of Williams, could not conceal his frustration when Logan Sargeant, who will be replaced by Carlos Sainz for 2025, crashed his upgraded Williams into the safety barrier at Zandvoort in a violent collision.

“When you have an extensive development package on the car as we do here, it’s the worst possible moment to put a race car into the safety rails. One hundred people have worked tirelessly for weeks on our major upgrade so that we could have two cars with the new parts. And then it’s all senselessly ruined in a second. You don’t take all the risks during the third practice session in the rain.”

Rumors now suggest that Vowles’ patience with Sargeant has finally worn thin and that he will be sidelined from the team after the checkered flag at Zandvoort.

“I don’t want to make an emotional decision now,” responds Vowles, “but I’m not ruling anything out.”

One option discussed is Red Bull reserve driver Liam Lawson, but Dr. Helmut Marko swiftly dismissed this possibility.

“We have our own plans for Liam in the near future.”

Vowles, whose team is powered by Mercedes engines, was then seen exiting the office of Toto Wolff at Zandvoort shortly after Sargeant’s severe crash.

Another option for Vowles would be to give Kimi Antonelli his F1 debut on behalf of Mercedes. The German team will announce his appointment at Monza. But Vowles would prefer a driver with F1 experience to support the team.

This could thus be a very good sign for Mick Schumacher – the official Mercedes reserve driver.

When asked about the 25-year-old German’s F1 future, Wolff said, “It’s difficult for me to judge. Audi is the only team that hasn’t named its second driver yet. And I don’t know what Williams will do after this Saturday’s debacle.”

Schumacher also commented on the situation on the day of the qualifications for the Dutch GP.

“I’m not giving up, there’s still one seat free. Discussions are ongoing, but nothing more.”

Replacing Sargeant would only be a short-term role for Schumacher, given that Sainz is under contract for 2025. Audi is his only real chance of securing a full-time seat.

“Everyone is taking their time now. Ultimately, they know what I can do and what they will get. I’ve had two years with Haas under my belt and they’ve seen what I can do. Let’s see.”
