Mexico’s F1 Grand Prix will extend its contract, despite local hero Sergio Perez missing the grid after 2024, with an official signing soon.
Clara Brugada, the mayor of Mexico City, hinted that the contract to host the Formula 1 Grand Prix would be extended on April 30, even though Sergio Perez will not be on the starting grid after 2024.
The Autodromo Hermanos Rodríguez circuit made its return to the F1 calendar in 2015, after a 23-year hiatus, and has remained a staple of the series ever since.
Mexico’s current contract for hosting the Grand Prix was set to expire after this year’s race, which will be the first without local hero Sergio Perez on the grid since his return to Formula 1.
With Perez’s departure, many speculated about the future of Mexico’s place on the F1 calendar.
However, the mayor confirmed at a press conference that a new contract would be signed next week.
“On April 30, we will sign the agreement with Formula 1, so it’s great news,” Brugada said.
While F1 has yet to make an official announcement, the news is expected to be confirmed at the end of the month, following the mayor’s statements.
