Sergio Perez endures a disastrous home Grand Prix, finishing last after a promising start turns into penalty-filled disappointment.
Sergio Perez failed to recover from a disastrous qualifying session on home soil, enduring a challenging race in Mexico that saw him finish in last position on the track.
The Mexican driver initially gained five positions at the start, but before that, he had moved out of place in his grid slot.
“A disaster at my home race! It looked promising at the start with a good launch, but then they penalised me… I made my way back up to 10th, but then I had a bit too tough of a battle with Liam Lawson. I don’t understand his racing style; I sustained damage and lost a lot of pace from that point onwards.”
Did he not notice that he was out of position on his grid slot?
“The team informed me that I wasn’t in my correct position, so I have to trust the FIA’s judgement on this, and the five-second penalty was justified.”
Was this his last Mexican Grand Prix?
“No, no, I fully intend to be back next year despite all the rumours!”
