Mercedes F1 has dismissed speculation around Lewis Hamilton’s future after his cryptic radio message following the São Paulo Grand Prix.
Mercedes F1 has dismissed speculation that the São Paulo Grand Prix marked Lewis Hamilton’s final race with the team, following his cryptic radio message on Sunday.
The seven-time F1 world champion endured another frustrating weekend, finishing in a modest 10th place at São Paulo.
Hamilton struggled with his W15, once again puzzled by its lack of pace over a single lap.
Surprisingly, he also faced challenges in the rain – conditions where he has historically excelled.
After crossing the line in 10th, Hamilton delivered an unusual message over team radio.
“It’s been a disastrous weekend, guys. The worst car ever. Thanks for trying, and well done to everyone in the pits for your hard work.”
“If that was the last time I got to perform, it’s a shame it wasn’t great, but I am grateful.”
Hamilton’s words, “if that was the last time,” sparked speculation on Tuesday that Brazil might have been his final race with the team.
After the race, Hamilton joked that he was eagerly anticipating his holiday break and looking forward to Christmas (read more here).
However, Mercedes F1 moved quickly to quell these rumours, with a spokesperson confirming that Hamilton will indeed be in the car for the final three races in Las Vegas, Qatar, and Abu Dhabi.
Hamilton will depart from Mercedes F1 following the Yas Marina circuit race, ahead of his move to Ferrari in 2025.
The 39-year-old driver will not debut on track with Ferrari in the post-season tests, as he still has numerous commitments with Mercedes.
His first drive with Ferrari is expected to take place at Fiorano in January, using a 2022 or 2023 F1 car, as permitted by the regulations.
