George Russell prioritises Mercedes’ 2025 ambitions, opting to compromise this season’s performance following two costly incidents.
George Russell has denied that his recent crashes in Austin and Mexico have put Mercedes at risk of exceeding Formula 1’s budget cap, despite concerns raised by team principal Toto Wolff (read more here).
However, Russell stated that he would be willing to continue using older-spec parts to ensure that Mercedes F1 does not compromise the resources allocated for next season’s car.
“No concerns about the budget cap. We have a small margin, and you’re always evaluating what you invest in this season versus what you invest in the next.”
“Now, potentially, we may need to make compromises for the remainder of this season, which, to be honest, I would probably support, as we’re not fighting for a championship.”
“I’d be more than happy to stick with the old floor if it gives us a better shot next year.”
“But, you know, I think we can repair the Austin floor. I think that’s the plan. It wasn’t as bad as we initially thought, and we should have it back in time for Brazil.”
