Lewis Hamilton opens up about his qualifying issues, attributing them to his stubborn nature while firmly dismissing any claims of disaster in the Mercedes camp.
Lewis Hamilton admits that he sometimes tries too hard to tailor his car to suit his own driving style during qualifying sessions. In doing so, the Mercedes F1 driver sometimes fails to achieve maximum performance, but he refutes the idea that his 2024 qualifying results, in which George Russell has outperformed him, are highly negative.
“I’m stubborn. And so, I keep trying to drive the way I want to drive,” Hamilton stated. “But I realize it doesn’t always work, and then I try to… coax a little more out of it. But it doesn’t work as well as I’d like.”
“I think ultimately, as a driver, you have to be able to adapt and admit that sometimes our approach to certain things isn’t perfect, and start looking for ways to preserve the essence of what has made us as good as we have been, and see how we can move things forward.”
“Ultimately, as drivers, you can’t drive just anything. I mean, you can’t. In some situations, some drivers do things better than others, and it takes some a bit of time, others not so much, to adapt. But I wouldn’t say it’s disastrous.”
Furthermore, the seven-time world champion explained to Esquire how he maintained motivation and stayed prepared to win until he found a car that allowed him to clinch his 104th victory at Silverstone: “It had been so long. So many thoughts go through your mind.”
“You start to believe some of them, little by little. It’s mostly a mental battle. Keeping sane, trying to acquire new tools. In the end, it always comes back to perseverance and dedication. Hard work. It always pays off in the end.”
“I had this day where I could excel, and we excelled as a team, and that put an end to all that. And it helps you rebuild. So it was really great to be able to do that at home, in my country, with my family. The last race with Mercedes at Silverstone. It couldn’t have been more magical.”
