Toto Wolff confirms no recent talks with Verstappen, reaffirming Mercedes’ commitment to its current driver lineup for the upcoming season.
At present, the continuation of Mercedes’ current driver lineup seems the most likely option for the team.
Toto Wolff, Mercedes F1’s team principal, hasn’t ruled out the possibility of Max Verstappen joining the team in the future. However, as of now, he insists that the likelihood of this happening anytime soon seems remote.
With growing speculation in the paddock about Verstappen’s future, Mercedes is frequently mentioned as one of the top contenders, along with Aston Martin F1, should the Red Bull star decide to leave his current team.
Wolff had previously attempted to recruit Verstappen last year to replace Lewis Hamilton, who was rumored to be heading to Ferrari. In the end, Mercedes opted to promote young talent Kimi Antonelli instead.
Despite the ongoing rumors, Wolff clarified that there have been no recent discussions with Verstappen. For now, the team’s focus is on maintaining its current driver lineup for the upcoming season.
“We haven’t had any discussions with Max,” Wolff stated. “Given the situation with George and Kimi, it’s clear that the future is with them… for now.”
Wolff also addressed recent rumors suggesting that George Russell’s contract extension was already in the works, firmly denying the claims.
“We’ll have those discussions once the European season starts, without any rush. George is performing at the highest level, just as we expected. He’s delivering on his promises, without a doubt.”
“We couldn’t ask for more from him. We have the summer recruitment window ahead of us, and there’s no reason to question anything… at this point in time.”
