Allison: Mercedes F1 Eyes 2025 Glory Despite 2024 Struggles

25/12/2024

James Allison reflects on Mercedes F1’s emotional 2024 season, emphasizing progress but underscoring the need for significant improvements in 2025.

Mercedes F1 technical director James Allison stated that the 2024 season is not one he wishes to repeat in 2025, even though clear progress was made.

Mercedes F1 secured four victories this year—three more than the past two seasons combined—but this additional success didn’t make the championship any more enjoyable for Allison.

“I wouldn’t want to repeat this year. It has been emotionally challenging.”

“We won three races in the middle of the year, then a final one in Las Vegas. We thought we were truly back at the front during the summer, but…”

“It’s been a real rollercoaster of extreme disappointment at the start of the year, followed by a sense of recovery, then some unease and a few more flashes of performance.”

“The general feeling within the team is one of a missed opportunity. We didn’t achieve the goals we had hoped to reach. Watching others win and take championships while we’re spectators is no fun at all. It’s been a tough year.”

“But I think that’s one of the best things about F1. It’s extremely challenging. It’s very hard to get everything right. Those who manage it truly deserve it, and you can only tip your hat to them because they’ve earned it. When I saw the smiles on the McLaren guys, I thought: ‘Well, they’ve earned it, and I know what that feels like, and I envy them for it.’”

“And it just makes you want to experience that again for yourself and for our team. So even though 2024 has been a season of progress, I want better for 2025. Everyone wants better.”
