Mercedes F1 Settles in Sixth Russell’s Predicted Finish

Russell’s Sixth Place: Mercedes Stuck in No-Man’s Land

02/11/2024

Russell expected a solitary sixth as Mercedes trails top teams yet stays clear of midfield challengers in Brazil.

George Russell finished sixth in the Brazilian Sprint. The Mercedes F1 driver ended up on his own, well adrift of the Ferraris and comfortably ahead of the rest, explaining that this outcome was precisely what he and his team anticipated.

“This is exactly what we expected. We’re isolated between the top five and the next group. This is the position we’re currently in,” said the British driver.

When asked about the surprise of seeing an Alpine and an RB F1 car close in on him at the start, Russell asserted that his car was ultimately superior: “Not at the start, as those cars were in the pack, but they made an aggressive start to stay within the DRS range.”

“I finished six seconds behind Carlos [Sainz] and six seconds ahead of [Pierre] Gasly, which is exactly what we expected. We need to keep progressing, but we’re not going to have a pole-worthy car by the next qualifying.”
