Mercedes F1 eyes Verstappen, Norris, and Piastri for a historic signing, driven by Christian Danner’s insights. With no barriers, Mercedes aims for a strong future post-Hamilton, exploring top talents for their lineup.
Mercedes F1 should try to sign Verstappen, Norris, or Piastri. According to Christian Danner, no legal or financial barriers should prevent exploring this. Mercedes ought to take the boldest step possible after losing Lewis Hamilton for 2025 and try to recruit Max Verstappen, who is under contract with Red Bull until the end of 2028.
This is the perspective of former F1 driver and German consultant, Christian Danner, following Toto Wolff’s revelation of his desire to discuss with the Dutch triple world champion.
“Every name must be discussed. There should be no legal or financial obstacle, and the same goes for contracts,” said Danner, stating he “understands Toto’s position.”
“Any driver who is at the level to be in a Mercedes should be a path to explore. That’s why they must also think about Max.”
Mercedes Eyes Piastri, Norris, Verstappen
He mentioned that Wolff should also scrutinize the contract details of McLaren’s young star duo, Oscar Piastri and Lando Norris, despite their very recent extensions!
“Max would of course be the best possible solution but Piastri and Norris would also both be among the best possible successors to Lewis. Both have everything they need to win multiple world championships if they have the right car.”
“But, after two years of crisis, Mercedes now has to prove it can still be successful. No one will commit without seeing what the W15 is worth.”
The good news for Mercedes, according to Danner, is that Hamilton’s teammate, George Russell – who is already signed for 2025 – is capable of taking over from the seven-time world champion as leader.
“Hamilton’s departure will of course hurt Mercedes but it could also be an opportunity.”
“The chance for Wolff and his team is that they can now discuss the choice of successor for months.”
Wolff indeed confirmed that “Lewis had the team’s well-being in mind when he announced his decision so early. This gives us planning security and allows us to explore the market.”
A name that continues to emerge as an interesting possibility for Mercedes is that of Kimi Antonelli, managed by Wolff, who is jumping directly to Formula 2 this year at only 17 years old.
“It might be too early for him as we speak but if he becomes Formula 2 champion this year, having already shown he is really an excellent driver, then you would have Russell and Antonelli at Mercedes. Wouldn’t that be cool?”
