Mercedes F1 feels calmer after Hamilton's 2025 Ferrari move

Mercedes F1 shows a calmer atmosphere post-Hamilton, with George Russell leading and Kimi Antonelli’s arrival sparking renewed energy and motivation.

Valtteri Bottas has highlighted a notable change at Mercedes F1 since Lewis Hamilton’s departure, describing the F1 team as “a bit more serene.”

The seven-time world champion decided to join Ferrari for the 2025 season, likely marking the final chapter of his career before retirement. Hamilton spent 12 years at Mercedes, claiming six of his seven titles with the team.

During that time, Bottas was Hamilton’s teammate for five seasons. The Hamilton-Bottas duo remained unbeaten in the constructors’ standings between 2017 and 2021, despite repeated threats from Ferrari and Red Bull.

Mercedes has chosen to promote Kimi Antonelli, a product of its academy, to replace Hamilton, while George Russell has naturally taken on the team’s leadership role.

Bottas, who has returned to Mercedes as a test and reserve driver after failing to secure a race seat this year, has identified what has and hasn’t changed since his return.

“Changes? Yes and no. In the end, the spirit has stayed the same.”

“The winning mentality is still there; everyone is working hard, trying to solve problems and improve. That absolutely hasn’t changed.”

“Otherwise, the loss of such a key figure like Lewis has, I think, made a difference.”

“It’s hard to describe, but I think there’s been a certain excitement about young Kimi coming in and George being the most experienced driver.”

“It’s maybe a bit more relaxed, in a way. You can sense the team is a bit more serene without the pressure Lewis used to bring.”
