George Russell delivered perfection in Las Vegas, clinching pole, victory, and leading a dominant one-two finish for Mercedes F1.
Mercedes F1 delivered a masterful performance in Las Vegas, securing a one-two finish led by George Russell. Starting from pole, the Briton remained flawless, leading all 50 laps to claim his second win of the year and the third of his career.
“I have a flight in a few hours, but I’m definitely not taking it! I’ll celebrate with my team. It’s been a dream weekend; we’ve been quick all weekend,” said Russell, who had already told Toto Wolff he planned to stay in Nevada as soon as he crossed the finish line.
“Vegas is a crazy place, and driving here, seeing all of it in the background… I can’t put it into words. We had a weekend of domination—victory, pole position, a one-two with Lewis—thanks to the team for making it happen.”
The Briton admitted he had feared a more challenging race: “I was waiting for something to go wrong. The two times I’d started from pole before, there was always chaos—rain, dry conditions, something happening, like the red flag in Brazil. But I felt confident here, built a solid gap, and it worked. I’m so happy.”
Hamilton Regrets Not ‘Getting the Job Done’ on Saturday
Lewis Hamilton completed the one-two finish but couldn’t help regretting missing out in Q3 the day before. Starting 10th, the seven-time world champion climbed to second and was the fastest on track for much of the race, closing to within five seconds of his teammate in the final laps.
“First of all, congratulations to Max for securing the title with races to spare,” Hamilton said. “If I’d done my job yesterday, it could’ve been a different story today. But I enjoyed fighting back from 10th. I don’t know why the car was so quick, but it’s the best we’ve had.”
Asked about the challenges of the cold night conditions, Hamilton dismissed the weather as a major factor: “The climate isn’t the toughest part; it’s more the timing of the race, so late at night. You’re going to bed at 5 a.m. and waking up in the middle of the day—it really messes with your rhythm. And yes, it’s cold, which might be why we were so fast.”
He now hopes to close out his time with Mercedes on a high note: “If the car performs like this in the upcoming races, we’ll be in a great position to fight at the front. The championship is decided, so we’ll aim for the best results possible.”
