Mercedes’ Wolff lauds Belgian GP, where both Russell and Hamilton shined, claiming a top finish.
Mercedes F1 Team Director Toto Wolff admits that he did not anticipate a victory in Belgium, especially following the first day’s practice sessions.
Yet, the German team clinched a remarkable one-two finish. Post-race, the Austrian expressed both his satisfaction and surprise, wishing both his drivers could have taken the win.
“Friday, we were not quite competitive, so we were only hoping for a podium at best. But then, the team at Brackley worked brilliantly overnight, and our engineers made the right call—the car performed well whether on one stop or two.”
“I would have liked to have two winners today, but we needed to cover Leclerc and Norris to avoid being undercut—that was the decision we had to make. George had nothing to lose. We were fifth, whether one stop or two, so he went for it and won his race.”
“We didn’t think it was possible, but at one point, we decided to just stay out. He stayed on track and ultimately, he managed to hold on.”
“He performed exceptionally well all day, but looking at the pace, Lewis was very strong today. I think they both did a fabulous job. The strategy favoured George over Lewis, and as I said, I would have liked two winners today.”
Will Mercedes F1’s form continue?
“Unfortunately, the season started in March, not in Austria. We need to stay grounded and do our best at each race, then see what the result is at the end of the championship. Finishing third would be a success.”
“It’s incredible. We were nowhere on Friday. We changed a few things on the car, and today, we were clearly ahead of everyone else.”
