Hamilton champions Antonelli as Mercedes F1’s future star.
Mercedes F1 could announce as soon as this weekend that Andrea Kimi Antonelli will replace Lewis Hamilton in 2025, partnering with George Russell. The seven-time world champion has disclosed his support for the young Italian’s nomination, who will also participate in FP1 this weekend.
“I’ve long held the belief that he was the right choice for the team moving forward,” Hamilton stated. “He’s one of those supremely talented youngsters emerging on the scene. He’s a young adult now, but only 18.”
“People need to remember he’s only 18, but he has a bright future ahead of him and I’m truly excited to see and track his progress. I saw a photo of the two of us back in 2018, I believe.”
“He was one of the grid kids, and I thought, ‘wow, now he’s going to be on the grid.’ It obviously reminds you of your age when you experience these moments, but yes, I’m eager to see him on the Formula 1 track.”
Toto Wolff and Mercedes have praised Antonelli throughout the season, and Hamilton explains that it’s well-deserved: “We’ve watched him across the different formulas. Naturally, he’s a Mercedes driver. We’re beginning to see a lot of young drivers coming through. I think we’re just in that period now.”
“There are only 20 seats, but it’s the time when we start to see this new wave arriving. In terms of choosing a driver with many years of experience over giving a chance to a youngster, that’s what happened with me and it worked out quite well.”
“In my view, it’s simply an opportunity for growth. He’ll be able to work with the best in his field, learn from people I’ve worked with and others who are new. It’s an excellent environment for him to flourish.”
Hamilton believes Antonelli must make the most of his FP1 sessions, particularly with the W15, while also contributing valuable data: “It’s always good to have more information. For Kimi, tomorrow, it’s all about having fun and enjoying himself. It will be a learning experience for him.”
“He has obviously done testing, but tomorrow will be the first time he’s testing this car, which is so much better than the 2022 model. So, he’ll definitely be all smiles tomorrow, that’s for sure. It’s quite a radical difference. The more information and feedback we have, the better.”
