Laurent Mekies lamented RB F1’s home race flop, pinned on run-ins with Nico Hülkenberg.
Laurent Mekies was disappointed that RB F1 failed to score points in its second home race of the season. The team director noted that both drivers clashed with Nico Hülkenberg, one as the aggressor, the other as the victim.
“First, what a fantastic advertisement for Formula 1 this weekend, with a large crowd at a renovated Monza circuit and what most of them wanted, a home victory. Our congratulations go to Ferrari and Charles Leclerc for their superb race,” said the Frenchman.
“As for our race, it could be said that it was dictated by Hülkenberg, with Daniel receiving a 5-second penalty for forcing him off the track, before Nico collided with Yuki, leading us to retire the car.”
“The most frustrating aspect of Yuki’s retirement is that we lost 40 laps which could have helped us better understand the updates we introduced here. Daniel then received an additional 10-second penalty because we did not correctly execute the first.”
“We will need to review our procedures in this scenario and learn from the mistake made. These things happen, but the work of our pit crew has generally been exceptional this season.”
What’s next for RB F1 is a series of tests with Pirelli, before figuring out how to extract more performance from the updates: “We now stay in Monza for a Pirelli tire test on Wednesday, and then we have a few days to see what lessons we can draw from this weekend, especially regarding the upgrade package.”
“Actually, this package was supposed to be available for the next round in Azerbaijan, but a significant effort from the factory allowed us to bring a set of parts to Monza, which we chose to use with Yuki.”
“We cannot hide the fact that, even without his penalties, it would have been difficult for Daniel to finish in the points. We absolutely need a performance improvement to get back to the front of the pack, and we are focusing on analyzing the data collected here before heading to Baku.”
