McLaren's Strategic Pause on F1 Upgrades Explained

Stella Unpacks McLaren F1’s Cautious Evolution

06/09/2024

McLaren F1’s approach to upgrades is cautious, prioritizing strategic development over rapid deployment, as explained by Andrea Stella.

McLaren F1 has not introduced a large number of evolution packages, but those implemented have been effective since the 2023 Austrian Grand Prix. This was the case in Miami, and again in Zandvoort. Andrea Stella, the team director, outlines the reasons why his team takes time to introduce new features.

“We have not introduced significant improvements since Miami,” Stella stated. “The next improvement, less significant than the one in Miami, took place in Zandvoort, and it did not involve the floor—it was just a detail. It concerned other parts of the car.”

“There is a reason why we have not introduced certain improvements, because if we had pressed the ‘go’ button, we might have had doubts when these parts were tested on the actual car. So we are taking our time to ensure that the development is ripe for use on the track.”

However, the Italian believes that while McLaren may not have the best car, its drivers make the most of it: “I think the order on the starting grid depends a lot on the drivers’ ability to exploit the available grip, rather than the car being dominant.”

“When you look at the actual lap times, rather than occupying the first two positions, you see that drivers from the four fastest teams were all capable of taking the top spot on the grid.”
