Oscar Piastri insists McLaren’s rear wing complies with all regulations, emphasizing the team’s pursuit of maximum performance without breaking rules amid suspicions of a “mini DRS” effect observed in Baku.
Oscar Piastri addressed suspicions about McLaren F1’s rear wing and its “mini DRS” effect noticed in Baku.
Without questioning its legality under current standards, the FIA nonetheless stated this morning that it is placing the wing under surveillance and is considering actions to better control flexibility in that area if necessary.
When asked about this during today’s press conference in Singapore, Piastri emphasized that this design is not solely responsible for the current pace of the MCL38.
“Well, it’s legal,” Piastri began as a reminder.
“As long as it passes all the tests—and we are tested often—it passes, so it’s certainly not the magic ticket or miracle solution for why we are competitive.”
“It’s legal, it passes all the tests, so I’m quite pleased with that.”
Piastri insisted that the first time he knew the wing flexed like that was after the Baku race, and that it was an example of McLaren pushing the technical rules to the maximum.
“To be honest, the first time I knew it was happening like that with our wing was at the same time as everyone else last week, and it’s not a grey area as some say.”
“It is tested every week, it’s legal, and they now have many different tests for rear wings, so honestly, I didn’t know it did that until three days ago.”
“Obviously, in sport, we find all possible performance without breaking the rules, and that’s what we do and what we must do to have a championship-winning car and team.”
Piastri also discussed team orders during the conference and stated that McLaren was ready to use them to help Lando Norris attempt to win the drivers’ championship if circumstances presented themselves at the Singapore Grand Prix.
“My victory in Baku last weekend hasn’t really changed much in McLaren’s approach.”
“Lando is still leading the championship and, to be honest, he has a more realistic chance of winning the championship.”
“If I’m able to win races, that’s what I want to do. But naturally, if there are moments when I can help Lando attempt to win the championship, then I’ll be happy to help if I can.”
“I think for me, maintaining the lead in the constructors’ championship is now a much more important objective. I’m not out of the race for the drivers’ championship, but I need to score more than ten points more per weekend than Max, I think. So I can try to win all the races, but I’m now at the point where I need other things to happen to win. And for that to happen over seven races in a row is not very realistic.”
“Of course, I’ll try to approach each weekend trying to achieve the best possible result, and if the picture starts to clear up a bit, that will be a bonus. But I’m certainly under no illusions that I’m not really in the fight for the championship. It’s more that if crazy things happen, I’ll be there to work my way into the battle, but the priority definitely goes to Lando.”
