McLaren continues to explore solutions for Lando Norris’ MCL39 issues, as the team struggles to pinpoint the car’s precise handling flaws.
McLaren’s pursuit of solutions for Lando Norris’ recent struggles with the MCL39 continues, as the team works to address the car’s challenging handling characteristics. The driver has found the car particularly difficult to manage, a situation that has led to a series of setbacks in recent races.
While McLaren initially stated that they were investigating possible fixes for Norris’ difficulties a few weeks ago, the team has yet to implement a definitive solution. Mark Temple, McLaren’s Technical Director of Performance, explains that the root causes remain unclear.
“We’ve had many discussions with Lando. He’s an incredibly talented and experienced driver, highly sensitive to the car’s behavior, and that’s reflected in his performance,” Temple said.
“That’s part of the challenge—we’re still unsure exactly what changes between the 2024 and 2025 concepts are responsible for the issues. While we know what modifications we’ve made to the car, pinpointing the cause of the car’s lack of balance is difficult.”
Temple emphasized the ongoing collaboration with Norris, stating, “We’re constantly analyzing data and reflecting on the adjustments we’ve made. There’s nothing obvious that stands out as the clear fix. We’re really digging into the details, approaching this with caution and careful thought, so we don’t risk compromising the car’s overall performance or make things more difficult for Lando.”
Looking back at the recent races, Temple noted that minor changes could help, but he also stressed that Norris himself needs to continue analyzing his driving style. “It’s also important for Lando to understand the car’s behavior and adjust his driving approach accordingly.”
