Lando Norris took a strategic approach, balancing risk and control, to secure a vital pole position on a challenging Brazilian track.
Lando Norris clinched a crucial pole position at Interlagos in a qualifying session marked by rain and multiple incidents. On the verge of elimination in Q1, the McLaren F1 driver regained his confidence, managing to fine-tune the risks he took on a notoriously tricky circuit.
“A lot happened in qualifying, and there was plenty of work to do. I wasn’t completely comfortable, so I’m pleased to be on pole. I made significant progress, and I’m a bit surprised to be on pole,” Norris admitted, explaining just how challenging it is to race in wet conditions.
“It’s probably even harder than it looks on TV, I think. We’re always trying to shave off some time, but we saw many drivers go off-track, have accidents, or lock up. It was easy to make a mistake that could have meant not participating in the race.”
“The balance between risk and reward was difficult to find today. In Q1, I struggled to determine how hard to push. That’s why I’m relieved, happy to finish qualifying, and pleased.”
With pole position secured while Max Verstappen starts from the back of the grid, Norris is cautious about championship ambitions: “There are very fast guys behind, George is quick, Yuki was all day. It’s never easy in these conditions. We’ll see, we’re well prepared, hoping for a good start, and we’ll see what we can do.”
