FIA Eyes McLaren F1 Wing, ‘Mini DRS’ in Focus

19/09/2024

FIA reviews McLaren F1’s rear wing and ‘Mini DRS,’ possibly boosting speed significantly.

It is hardly surprising given the blatant images from Baku: the FIA has placed McLaren F1’s rear wing under scrutiny after observing, along with other teams, media, and fans, an abnormal flexibility of its rear wing at the edges, creating an opening at high speed that mimics a ‘mini DRS’ without the system being activated.

This could increase top speed by 3 to 5 km/h according to some engineers, offering a significant advantage.

Consequently, the FIA has issued a statement in response to this discovery.

“The FIA is closely monitoring the body flexibility of all cars and reserves the right to request teams to make modifications at any point during the season. However, if a team successfully passes all deformation tests and adheres to the regulations and technical guidelines, it is deemed fully compliant and no further action will be taken,” the statement reminds in its preamble.

Regarding McLaren specifically, the FIA adds that it “is currently examining the data and any additional evidence that has emerged from the Baku GP and is considering any mitigating measures for future implementation.”

“This is part of the standard process when checking technical legality, and the FIA retains the authority to introduce regulatory changes during the season if necessary.”

Therefore, McLaren F1’s rear wing is indeed legal considering current tests. It remains to be seen if the FIA can devise another control test to counteract this mini DRS effect before the entire grid adopts Woking’s team idea!

Of course, with the reaction time allowed to teams, it is likely that the test will not really be implemented until the start of the 2025 season.
