Norris Warns of McLaren’s ‘Greatest Weakness’ in Canada

07/06/2024

Lando Norris predicts McLaren F1’s key flaw will be exposed during the upcoming Canadian Grand Prix.

Lando Norris is somewhat concerned about McLaren F1’s performance at the Canadian Grand Prix. The driver believes that the Woking team will struggle more to find the right setup for their car. He explains that Monaco was favorable for McLaren because it only involved slow corners, but the MCL38 is a bit more challenging to adjust with compromises.

“I think it’s still our biggest weakness, and yes, we were good in Monaco, but that’s when you can focus on slow speed. I think when you need to focus more on both medium and low speeds at the same time, that’s where we struggle to find a better balance between the two,” Norris stated.

“And Monaco is Monaco, so I wouldn’t say we’ve fixed our slow speed, I think we still need to improve it to match up to Ferrari. I think they are the benchmark in terms of slow-speed corners.”

Asked about the possibility of McLaren succeeding against Red Bull on a track that doesn’t favor their car, Norris is skeptical: “At the level of Red Bull, clearly we are not, because despite their difficulties, they are not bad in slow corners, at the same time.”

“It’s just a combination of handling, confidence, and driver feel in the car, so I don’t think it’s as simple as that. I don’t think it’s as straightforward as that. But we have clearly improved. It’s probably one of the areas where we have improved the most.”

Despite greater progress than expected, McLaren still has issues to resolve, as Norris explains: “I still feel like I’m struggling as much, which is always the feeling you get in the car.”

“But I’m fighting with the same issues; it’s not as if we’ve solved our problems. I still don’t feel confident and comfortable with certain things from that perspective, but it’s clear we are closer to where we need to be compared to other teams around us.”
