McLaren made a bold move for Max Verstappen, but Zak Brown’s interest faded quickly once he saw the astronomical cost.
McLaren’s surprise attempt to lure Max Verstappen away from Red Bull didn’t get very far—mostly because of the price tag.
Speaking to the media, Verstappen revealed that McLaren CEO Zak Brown reached out to his management team in an exploratory move. However, the conversation was cut short when Brown realized just how much it would cost to break the reigning F1 champion’s contract.

“He didn’t call me directly,” Verstappen clarified. “But I don’t think the discussion lasted very long. Once he saw the number, it was over immediately.”
When asked just how much it would take to sign him away, Verstappen simply laughed: “A lot!”
The Dutch driver isn’t interested in playing the speculation game. “I don’t waste my energy on that kind of thing,” he said. “This is my 11th season—I know where I stand.”
Despite recent struggles, Verstappen remains committed to Red Bull. “Of course, we all want to go faster, but that’s racing. I’m doing my best, and outside of that, I have other things keeping me busy. I’m happy where I am—with my team, my family, and my friends.”
For now, Verstappen isn’t going anywhere—and if McLaren wants him, they’ll need a serious budget to even start the conversation.
