Red Bull’s strategy chief, Will Courtenay, is set to become McLaren F1’s next Sporting Director. His start date, however, remains uncertain.
McLaren Racing announced today that Will Courtenay will join its Formula 1 team as Sporting Director… but it remains to be seen when since Red Bull Racing claims he has nearly two years left on his contract!
This marks another major capture from Red Bull Racing for McLaren, following Rob Marshall last year, as Courtenay was none other than the head of race strategy!
Under the supervision of Randeep Singh, Race Director, Courtenay will help to develop the sporting operations of the team as it continues its pursuit of world championship success.
Courtenay has spent 20 years at Red Bull Racing, highlighting the significance of his departure. He will bring a wealth of experience.
Andrea Stella, Team Principal at McLaren F1, said: “We are thrilled to welcome Will to McLaren. His experience, professionalism, and passion for motorsport make him the ideal candidate to be our F1 Sporting Director.”
“We are now entering a key phase in our journey as a team, and we are confident he will be an excellent addition to our strong management team as we strive to continue fighting for victories and championships.”
Red Bull has declined to comment officially on the transfer, but a source within the team has already contested the immediacy of this appointment.
“After a long and successful career with the team since the Jaguar days, we are sad to see Will go but will wish him all the best in this new role.”
“However, Will must continue to be part of the team until the end of his contract in mid-2026.”
While Red Bull’s stance is that Courtenay should fulfill his contract, typically in such situations, the teams enter a period of negotiation leading to a compromise that allows the employee to leave earlier.
It remains to be seen, therefore, when Courtenay can actually depart for McLaren F1…
