Lando Norris criticizes teammate Piastri’s overly close racing at Monza, sparking team review.
Lando Norris was markedly less forgiving towards Oscar Piastri in Monza’s press conference area than he had been immediately post-race in front of the cameras.
As Andrea Stella, McLaren F1’s team principal, acknowledged that their first-lap overtaking manoeuvre needed reassessment—being too aggressive and ultimately benefiting Ferrari—Norris seemed more inclined to criticise the Australian rookie.
“I feel he was too close. It’s not just a feeling; we both could have been knocked out in that first corner if I had braked a metre later.”
“If I could go back, I would handle things slightly differently. But, that’s racing.”
“Charles won with a two-second lead in the end, and the fact that he got ahead of me at the start probably saved him crucial seconds during the race.”
“We couldn’t make a single stop because the front tyre degradation was too severe. That’s a current weakness for us.”
Is McLaren being more cautious with strategic risks while letting their drivers battle like this from the start?
“Wow, what a question… Hindsight is a wonderful thing. We will review the start with the team and Oscar internally. I don’t want to say too much in the heat of the moment, but I am certainly not happy, nor is the team, apart from Oscar perhaps. We are always examining things.”
“Otherwise, we are doing very well. It wasn’t our day today, and we didn’t get things right, but I wouldn’t say we messed up either.”
“I definitely couldn’t have made just one stop being the second car on track, which is harder than being the first.”
“Trying to follow Oscar in dirty air meant I had to use up a lot more tyre. That was the price I paid.”
