McLaren F1 eyes critical developments, aiming for a performance boost with potential new components in upcoming races.
McLaren F1 has revealed it will introduce further developments to its car over the “next two races,” either in Mexico or Brazil.
The Woking-based team is aiming to defend its 40-point lead over Red Bull and 48-point advantage over Ferrari in the remaining five races, as it chases its first constructors’ championship victory since 1998.
McLaren’s success this season can also be attributed to its ability to avoid the setbacks that have plagued its rivals, thanks to a cautious approach when implementing updates to its MCL38.
The autumn break provided teams with an opportunity to bring new parts to the Circuit of the Americas, but McLaren didn’t unveil everything in Austin.
“I think the next circuit (Mexico) should suit the characteristics of our car a bit better,” said team principal Andrea Stella.
“We also need to continue developing the car. As in Austin, we brought a few updates to the front of the car, but they weren’t too significant in terms of their potential impact on lap time.”
“We still have a few more components coming in the next two races. We’ll see if we can make a difference to the car’s competitiveness.”
McLaren revealed earlier in the weekend that it had opted not to test a new floor, preferring to ensure that other components were performing as expected.
However, with the team facing challenges from Ferrari and Red Bull, Stella was asked whether McLaren should have been more aggressive with its updates.
“If we had been able to produce them in time to bring to Austin, we would have done so,” he explained.
“I believe the natural moment for new parts and upgrades to appear on track is when they are designed, finalised, and produced.”
“That said, we wanted to make sure that what we bring to the track behaves as expected.”
“We are very encouraged, and once again, I must commend our aerodynamics team because the parts we brought to Austin worked as planned.”
