Stella affirms McLaren’s dual-lead strategy focuses on team victories, keeping their eyes on both championship titles.
Andrea Stella provided an update on McLaren F1’s team order philosophy. In Baku, orders favored Oscar Piastri as Lando Norris started from the back, but Norris will always have an advantage.
“I have already stated that we indeed have two leading drivers, and having two leading drivers means we approach things primarily in the team’s interest,” Stella confirmed. “The team’s interest is to win the constructors’ championship and, of course, the drivers’ championship. Lando was in the most favorable position before this race.”
“I think he is still in the most favorable position. So naturally, we would have supported Lando. But I think we proved in Baku that, interestingly, it was Lando who supported Oscar and enabled Oscar’s victory by driving for the team and supporting his teammate.”
“I believe this remains our approach. We have always intended to review after each event, with each driver, with the drivers together, what the best approach would be for the upcoming races. We will do this and establish the plan for Singapore.”
The Italian detailed how McLaren now approaches the remainder of the season and why it deviated from its initial instructions in Baku. The plan will evolve race by race depending on the overall championship situation.
“I think we are guided by principles, which is slightly different from rules. I think with principles, you allow yourself space to evaluate each situation, but you have your markers to monitor what you deem right. So we have clarified our conversations about such situations.”
“We knew that if either of the two drivers needed help, we would provide it. And as I’ve already mentioned, it was interesting to see that it was time for Lando to assist Oscar. We will now review this race, and we will talk to the drivers. We will define and refine the plan for the upcoming races.”
