Andrea Stella confirms McLaren F1’s unwavering focus on securing the constructors’ championship, deeming the drivers’ title a secondary goal.
After Max Verstappen’s victory and Lando Norris’s sixth place in Brazil, extending the gap between the two championship frontrunners to 62 points, the drivers’ title seems increasingly out of reach for McLaren F1. However, Andrea Stella, the head of the British team, maintains that McLaren has always prioritised the constructors’ crown.
“As far as the constructors’ championship is concerned, I don’t think this changes anything, as that has always been our priority,” Stella stated. “Even when it came to supporting one driver over another, that was always secondary to maximising our performance in the constructors’ championship.”
The Italian remains optimistic that two of the final three races could favour McLaren: “Now, it’s clear we need to assess the points situation. Mathematically, we’re still in the championship—I haven’t looked at the standings closely yet, but I’m not mistaken.”
“I believe Lando and Oscar will aim to win the remaining races. The last two circuits should be quite favourable for us, while Vegas might lean more towards Ferrari—we’ll see. But everything is still to play for, and the constructors’ championship has always been, and remains, our priority.”
Despite a few mistakes from Norris, Stella points out that the MCL38 struggled under wet conditions: “Regarding the drivers’ championship, I don’t think Lando felt any particular pressure.”
“From the outside, it may have seemed like there were errors, but we weren’t the fastest car on intermediates, as we were on dry tyres. I don’t think pressure played a significant role for Lando.”
