In Miami’s qualifying round, McLaren faced challenges, with Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri only managing to secure starts from the third row after failing to optimize their car setups.
Lando Norris bounced back in today’s qualifying in Miami compared to his performance yesterday during the same session but for the Sprint.
The British driver made no mistakes to secure 5th place, behind the Red Bulls and Ferraris, yet he felt his McLaren MCL38 could have been faster with better balance. According to him, the setup adjustments went in the wrong direction.
“We performed better than yesterday in terms of tire management, but struggled a bit more with the car’s balance.”
“We made some changes, but perhaps not in the right direction. I was much more confident yesterday than today, so yes, there are things to revisit.”
“However, for me, it’s a better qualification at least, it’s tight with the others.”
“I think we should be a bit higher. We did what we thought was right, but sometimes things pan out differently on the track.”
“We made some adjustments and I wish I could go back now before tomorrow, but obviously, we can’t with parc fermé rules.”
Oscar Piastri confirmed his pace behind his teammate with the 6th fastest time, ahead of both Mercedes F1 cars. He qualified just 81 milliseconds behind the Brit.
“The track didn’t improve, it was tough to find time in the last run. The tires are delicate and if you push too hard, it’s ‘game over.’ But I’m pleased with the session, I felt good and solid throughout, I’m happy,” stated Piastri.
“In the race, it should be fine. Ferrari was faster than we thought in qualifying, but we are in a good position, in good form. I know how much I missed today and so I’m quite satisfied.”
