McLaren F1 Faces Tough Task to Maintain Performance

Brown Warns: Rivals Closing In on McLaren F1

20/10/2024

Zak Brown admits McLaren F1 must navigate fierce competition as rivals improve, making it increasingly difficult to maintain their performance edge.

Zak Brown, CEO of McLaren F1, acknowledges the challenge of maintaining an advantage over Red Bull as the rival team continues to make progress. However, the American highlights that the Woking-based team has not truly dominated the races.

“Dominant is probably not a word I would use,” Brown stated. “I would say we have a great racing car, but we haven’t won the most races this year.”

“We simply need to keep doing what we’re doing. It’s a challenging game that evolves rapidly. You can move forward quickly or slide back just as fast. This is a sport where all our rivals are consistently improving. I’m not sure there are any teams that are regressing.”

“What ultimately happens is that other teams advance at a faster pace. If you take the pole-sitting car and leave it unchanged by the end of the year, it will likely be at the back of the grid. I think this reflects the excellence of all the teams in Formula 1.”

“We must therefore continue our efforts at the factory and here at the circuit. Everyone is doing their part. McLaren is performing well, but there are no guarantees in this sport, which is why we must keep our heads down and stay focused.”

When asked how he copes with the prevailing dominance and the quest for continued success, Brown explains that it varies by individual: “I think it’s probably a mix of both, depending on one’s personality. Mine, in particular, is one that tends to look in the rearview mirror, somewhat nervously.”

“There are others who thrive on the thrill and pursuit of victory that drives them. So, it’s likely a good blend of both that motivates everyone to get up each day and continue making those small advancements.”
