McLaren F1 Directed to Alter Wing Over DRS Concerns

Official : FIA Orders McLaren F1 to Revise Rear Wing Design

FIA has mandated McLaren F1 to adjust its rear wing, citing issues with the mini DRS effect.

The FIA has finally asked McLaren F1 to modify its flexible rear wing due to its “mini DRS” effect.

The rear wing was not deemed illegal by the governing body of the sport—however, the team must “implement adjustments to control the amount of movement of the element.”

Onboard images of Oscar Piastri’s rear wing were enough to convince the Federation that McLaren was circumventing the overall regulations defining body flexibility, even though all static tests were successfully passed.

Speaking in Singapore, McLaren CEO Zak Brown defended the rear wing setup and praised the Woking-based team’s engineering group.

“It passed all the tests. I think that’s Formula 1, it’s smart engineering. The FIA agrees with that. Then, as usual, often innovations have to be shelved.”

The FIA confirmed ahead of the Singapore Grand Prix that it might consider modifying the technical regulations if it was not satisfied with certain elements of the cars on the grid.

Although McLaren was not judged to have breached the regulations, it must now proceed with changes to reduce the movement of the rear wing.

In technical directive No. 34, the FIA states that it does not consider as legal: “designs whose structural features are altered by secondary parameters, in a way to produce (when driving on the track) a deflection characteristic different from that at rest during FIA checks. Examples of secondary parameters might include temperature, aerodynamic load, etc.”

McLaren has already responded: “While our Baku rear wing complies with the regulations and passes all FIA deflection tests, McLaren has proactively proposed to make a few minor adjustments to the wing following our conversations with the FIA.”

McLaren also indicated that the rear wings of other cars might behave in the same manner. “We also expect the FIA to have similar conversations with other teams regarding the compliance of their rear wings.”
