McLaren’s resurgence sparks hope for more victories, though a championship title remains uncertain.
Lando Norris’s victory in Miami last Sunday was McLaren F1’s first since Australian Daniel Ricciardo led a one-two finish for the team at Monza in 2021.
The Briton has stated that he now sees McLaren winning more races in the coming months and years (read here), not ruling out taking the title in 2025.
It may still be too big a step, according to CEO Zak Brown, who nevertheless hopes that the Miami victory will kickstart more regular wins.
“I don’t see why we can’t fight for more victories,” Brown says, responding to Norris’s hopes.
“But, it won’t be easy. Red Bull still has the pace, it was just one race and we were really on form. But in the last two races, even though we were faster than Ferrari and closer to Red Bull, we were still behind.”
“We are certainly in the game. This shows that Red Bull is beatable and we intend to beat them, as well as anyone else, a few more times this year, so I see no reason why we shouldn’t.”
Regarding 2025, Brown added: “Next year will be an evolution of this year’s car, and we are only a few tenths off, but it’s still a few tenths. So I definitely want to stay away from predictions for a championship.”
“I like the trajectory we are on. I’ve always said that once you win a race, there’s no reason you can’t win several races and once you’ve won several races, you’re competing for world championships. Let’s wait and see if we can win more races consistently before competing for the world championship. But it’s not that far off.”
