Max Verstappen remains steadfast in his self-belief, dismissing any notions of weaknesses as he reflects on his unparalleled success.
Max Verstappen impressed so much in 2024 with his personal performance, securing his fourth world title, that he even earned praise from his main rival, Lando Norris.
The McLaren F1 driver stated in Las Vegas, after Verstappen’s championship win, that the Dutchman had no weaknesses.
When asked if that’s true, Verstappen told F1’s official website: “I don’t feel like I have weaknesses – and of course, I would never admit to them anyway!”
“But I’m also very open-minded because I know I can always improve, though I also know it’s very challenging. I understand that over a single weekend, people can deliver incredible performances, but it’s about knowing how to maintain very strong performances throughout the entire year.”
“It’s connected to many factors. I don’t want to go into too much detail because, of course, I’m missing some things. As a driver, you must be at your best every time. You have to figure out what works for you, as every driver has a different approach, but you must understand what suits you.”
However, Verstappen has faced criticism for his recurring approach in wheel-to-wheel duels, often forcing opponents off track to protect or gain position. He fully stands by this style of racing.
“There were tough races, questionable moves, and uncertain moments, but I know what I’m doing—I’m fully in control of what I do. Sometimes, of course, there’s thought behind it. I execute well on track, and sometimes it’s necessary. I will always do everything I can to win.”
“I hate losing. I can acknowledge when someone does a better job, but it’s never enjoyable to lose. That’s the defining factor: we have to be better. Even when we succeeded in 2023, we wanted to find more performance. That’s something that certainly taught us a lot in 2024.”
Verstappen has occasionally drawn the ire of the stewards, but even in difficult moments, he has remained remarkably composed.
“I don’t talk to people about it. I like to solve problems on my own, in my head. That can be seen as positive or negative, depending on your perspective, but it works for me. Throughout the year, thoughts always cross your mind. I’ve managed to contain them, and I’m very proud of that.”
