Max Verstappen shares his thoughts on a costly pit penalty following a challenging race in Mexico, expressing frustration with the outcome.
Max Verstappen was immediately questioned about his double 10-second penalty in Mexico following his battle with Lando Norris at the start of the race.
The Red Bull driver climbed back to 6th place, conceding 10 points to Norris. At the finish, he remained philosophical.
“To be honest, it’s a lot of seconds, but it doesn’t really matter given the race pace—we were far off. I struggled a lot with the tyres; we were not in the same league as Ferrari and McLaren.”
Will he change his racing approach now that the FIA appears more inclined to penalise him?
“No change in approach, no, no.”
“I think 20 seconds in the pits is a long time. Next time, I’ll make sure I have a drink during that time!”
10 points lost— is that a positive or a negative in this context?
“Of course, I’m pleased to have limited the damage a little, but there’s a lot to analyse before Brazil.”
“Things are getting more complicated; we’re experiencing ups and downs, and we need to make the car more competitive.”
“The problem is that when you’re slower, you find yourself in these kinds of situations. I’m not going to give up easily.”
“But the biggest issue today, and what concerns me, is the race pace, once again. It really wasn’t good, and that’s something we need to analyse. Even without those penalties, we had no chance of fighting at the front.”
“I’m not worried about the title. This was a very bad race for us, but I also know that we can do much better than this, so we’ll keep fighting.”
