Max Agrees Some Countries Overdo Media Nationalism

Verstappen Backs Newey on British Media Bias Claims

28/09/2024

Max Verstappen fully supports Adrian Newey’s comments on bias in the British media, stating that some countries take nationalism too far.

Adrian Newey has defended triple world champion Max Verstappen over how he is often portrayed in the British press.

“There’s a sort of demonization that both of them have suffered at times, which is very unfair,” Newey said, referring to the Dutchman and German driver Sebastian Vettel.

He pointed to the “British media” in general and specifically criticized the “quite nationalistic” coverage by British broadcaster Sky, whose Formula 1 coverage is also syndicated to other countries.

“Absolutely. I agree 100%,” said Verstappen.

“In discussions, you always defend your compatriot instead of the other driver in a duel where it’s quite 50-50, where there can be a debate.”

“But you also try to remain as neutral as possible, and some countries overdo it, I think.”

“In the end, they can say and shout whatever they want. It doesn’t matter to me.”

He praised Newey for his “honesty.”

“He is British after all.”

Bias is also visible in other countries. Tom Coronel, former driver and Formula 1 consultant in the Netherlands, has been criticized for being too “pro-Max.”

“People sometimes tell me to take off my orange glasses, but I’m not necessarily wearing orange glasses. I just like his attacking style. That’s why I’ve always been a fan of Max.”

“He never bores us. There’s always something happening around him. There’s fire in this man, whether he crashes or wins.”
