Felipe Massa seeks legal recognition as 2008 F1 champion, with Bernie Ecclestone supporting his case against FOM and FIA.
Felipe Massa has stated that Bernie Ecclestone, former CEO of Formula One Management (FOM), has expressed his support for the legal action he has initiated against FOM and the FIA regarding the 2008 Singapore “Crashgate” incident.
Massa filed the lawsuit after Ecclestone claimed that the FIA knew before the end of the 2008 season that the Singapore Grand Prix had been manipulated by Renault, the race winner.
Nelson Piquet Jr. deliberately crashed his car during the race to trigger a safety car period, which benefitted his teammate Fernando Alonso. A botched pit stop for Massa cost him crucial points, and he ultimately lost the World Championship to Lewis Hamilton at the end of the season.
“Of course, we are fighting because something unjust happened due to what occurred,” Massa explained.
“The legal action is ongoing, but as always with the justice system, it takes time.”
“What I am truly seeking is to be recognized—recognized as a champion because I deserve it. What happened to me wasn’t fair, as it was caused by something during the race that doesn’t belong in the sport. That’s why I’m fighting, and I will fight to the end.”
When asked if he had spoken to Ecclestone about the matter, Massa replied: “Yes. He said I was right to go to court.”
