Marko Compares Verstappen to Senna: Striking Similarities

15/12/2024

Helmut Marko likens Max Verstappen to Ayrton Senna, highlighting their shared personality traits and Verstappen’s rise among F1 legends.

Dr. Helmut Marko stated that Max Verstappen reminds him of Ayrton Senna, the F1 driver widely regarded by many as the greatest of all time.

Although this comparison has long been viewed as reductive and nearly impossible to resolve, it remains high praise for the Dutchman, just weeks after surpassing Senna in terms of driver titles won.

By clinching his fourth championship in Las Vegas, Verstappen reached the same level as former Red Bull driver Sebastian Vettel—and Senna’s old rival, Alain Prost.

“Max reminds me of Ayrton Senna. The two have very similar personalities, though the charisma Senna had—and still has—is incredible.”

“Of course, when someone faces a fatal accident, all of this is tragically amplified. But among all the drivers I know, he is actually the one who resembles him the most.”

Like Vettel—and unlike Senna and Prost—Verstappen has won all his titles consecutively. The German driver secured his four crowns with Red Bull between 2010 and 2013.

However, for Marko, there are clear differences in how the two Milton Keynes team champions approach things.

“It was a different era with Seb. They are two opposites. Seb is incredible in terms of details and can spend an hour discussing minor points with the engineers.”

“Max just does what is needed and has everything under control. With Max, it would be great if we could aim for a fifth title. The team is motivated and knows it has to work hard for 2025. But we want that fifth title.”
