After engine issues in Mexico, Verstappen faces a grid penalty at the Brazilian GP, a tough decision Marko calls inevitable.
Max Verstappen will face a grid penalty at the Brazilian Grand Prix. Helmut Marko has confirmed this decision, calling it inevitable.
After a difficult race in Mexico, questions arose about whether Verstappen would incur a penalty for the upcoming race. The answer is yes. In his Speedweek column, Marko explains that the engine issue encountered in Mexico significantly influenced this decision.
“Max’s weekend in Mexico started poorly on Friday with a leak in the engine intake,” Marko states. “As a result, Max couldn’t participate in the first two practice sessions. This lack of track time impacted our performance, especially on hard tires during the race. In terms of speed, we were only the fifth-fastest car.”
Marko also emphasizes the engine’s role in the disappointing performance. “Our pace was lacking because we had to install a different engine. This unit was at the end of its cycle and wasn’t meant to be used in races anymore. That’s one reason our car was among the slowest on the straight. When an F1 engine reaches a certain mileage, a drop in performance is inevitable.”
Regarding the possibility of reusing the faulty engine, Marko clarifies: “We are currently assessing if it can be repaired, but it wasn’t intended for competition use anymore. Therefore, an engine change in Brazil, along with the associated penalty, is unavoidable.”
This decision marks a critical challenge for Verstappen, who will face the task of starting further down the grid in Brazil.
