Helmut Marko asserts Max Verstappen could have won in Canada, regardless of whether he was driving for McLaren F1 or Mercedes, highlighting his exceptional racing prowess.
Helmut Marko believes that Max Verstappen could have won the Canadian Grand Prix if he had been driving for McLaren F1 or Mercedes. The Austrian is convinced that the Dutchman’s skills enabled Red Bull to secure a victory in Montreal, despite the team’s solid operational performance.
“Yes. Only Max has an overview of the race and the confidence necessary to push the accelerator when needed. Moreover, our team adopted the right strategy,” stated the Austrian consultant.
Marko is certain that the championship will not be easily decided: “It won’t be a straightforward story, as our car and simulator show some weaknesses. But we are working hard to address these.”
“We have always understood that we would not win every race. It’s beneficial for us that others cannot maintain consistency. If things go normally for us, Max will be leading the race.”
Sergio Pérez received a three-place penalty for entering the pits with a damaged car and for losing carbon parts on the track. Marko no longer wants to discuss it and explains that the team hoped the damage was not severe.
“We will no longer talk about this, we will recover from this three-place demotion. At the time, we didn’t realize how significant the damage was. We couldn’t see it from the camera angle we had.”
“We wanted Checo to continue, as anything was possible in this race. And you never know how much debris might fly off. Others have raced with more detached parts. Lewis Hamilton once won at Silverstone on three wheels.”
