Sergio Perez battles swirling rumours over his future, as Helmut Marko raises questions about his Red Bull position.
Sergio Perez believes that the rumours swirling about his future are being spread with a clear objective: to undermine him. And these speculations are being fuelled not only by the media but by Dr Helmut Marko himself.
Less than a month ago, amid a wave of speculation suggesting he was either preparing to announce his retirement or being ousted by Red Bull, the Mexican driver took to social media to lash out at a particular journalist, posting a meme from The Wolf of Wall Street.
The meme featured Leonardo DiCaprio’s character shouting, “I’m not f***ing leaving.”
“In the end, that guy didn’t say much,” Perez said in Mexico ahead of his home race this weekend, “but last year it was the same.”
“I don’t think it’s right for these guys to make up such rumours because, ultimately, you create uncertainty for the people who make an enormous effort to come and support me at the Mexican GP. I don’t think it’s fair.”
At 34 years old, Perez even believes that certain journalists are following “agendas.”
“After so many years in Formula 1, you come to understand. There are many agendas in F1. Some are pushed through media outlets. In exchange for certain information, they’re asked to do the dirty work, to weaken someone or, on the contrary, to boost their profile. Eventually, you understand how journalism operates.”
“I always try to stay focused on my job, and the interviews I do are because I have to do them. But when they go after my loved ones, I feel like I need to take action, and that’s what I did—I’m not leaving.”
Yet, Dr Marko has once again reiterated that Perez’s position remains uncertain!
“Perez may have a contract, but Formula 1 is a meritocracy. If the performances aren’t up to standard, even contracts are meaningless. At the end of the season, we’ll sit down and decide who is the best teammate for Verstappen at Red Bull.”
Marko drives the point home by adding that Lawson, who has stepped in for Daniel Ricciardo until the end of the season, is currently leading the race for the seat.
“After the Austin race, Lawson is wearing the yellow jersey. We’ll keep an eye on him for a few more races and then assess him.”
Undeterred by these remarks, Perez responded: “I have a contract, I know exactly what it contains, and there is no doubt that I will be here next year.”
Perez’s father, Antonio, also spoke ahead of the Mexican GP, making a statement that drew widespread smiles (and even laughter) on social media.
“The best of Checo Perez is yet to come. I’m certain that, in due course, Checo will have the weapons and tools to fight for the world championship. I’m very excited and can confidently say Checo will be world champion.”
Antonio Perez Garibay, a well-known political figure in Mexico, also acknowledged that driving for Red Bull inevitably brings constant pressure and speculation.
“It’s the most coveted seat in the world. Today, regardless of the team, Red Bull is the best in the world. If Checo had still been with a team like Sauber or Force India, you’d hardly hear about him anymore.”
“These four years have made him well-known, but the best of Checo is yet to come. In life, winning isn’t easy—you have to fight for it. The only thing that comes free in life is the rain.”
