F1: Magnussen Rejects Haas’ Offer for Reserve Role

Kevin Magnussen declines Haas’ offer to become their reserve driver in Formula 1.

Kevin Magnussen has stated that he is not interested in maintaining a foothold in Formula 1 next year as a reserve driver.

The 31-year-old driver’s second stint in F1 with Haas is set to conclude this year, amid strengthening rumours that Esteban Ocon’s new contract will be announced before next week’s Belgian Grand Prix.

Haas F1 team principal Ayao Komatsu has offered Magnussen a reserve role for 2025 and beyond.

“If I were to drive for another team in Formula 1, it wouldn’t work,” Magnussen smiled in Hungary. “As I said, I’m looking to secure my place; there are possibilities.”

“But, in response to this offer… if I’m not with another team in F1, I would certainly consider an advisory role or something like that with Haas, that would be feasible.”

However, what he will not do is attend every Grand Prix as a reserve driver.

“I don’t think that interests me,” said the Dane. “I wouldn’t want to go to each race as a substitute waiting for someone to get injured so I could compete again. I don’t think that’s very exciting. I’d rather do something else that fulfills me and involves racing, even if it means traveling just as much!”

When asked whether he thinks Ocon and other drivers deserve a spot more than him, Magnussen responded: “In Formula 1, things happen and you move on.”

“You can look at other drivers and wonder if they are better than me or not? But that’s not really the issue, because it’s a fact they are there – and that’s that.”
