After months of political setbacks, Madrid is finally set to begin work on its ambitious new Formula 1 street circuit project.
After months of delays and uncertainty, Madrid is finally getting back on track in its push to host a Formula 1 Grand Prix starting in 2026.
The Spanish capital holds a long-term deal to bring F1 to a brand-new urban circuit, dubbed the “Madring,” with the event taking over as the official Spanish Grand Prix from Barcelona. While Barcelona remains on the calendar for one final race next year, the future of the event clearly lies in Madrid.
But things haven’t gone entirely smoothly. Political hurdles and local opposition have stalled construction, leaving the ambitious project behind schedule and raising doubts about whether it could be completed in time.
Now, city officials are signaling a turning point.
Madrid’s mayor, José Luis Martínez-Almeida, confirmed that preparations are finally moving forward, with construction expected to begin within weeks.
“We’ve already launched the tender process for building the circuit,” the mayor said. “We plan to grant the construction license right after Easter, which means work should officially begin in May—keeping us on schedule for the 2026 race.”
It’s a major step forward for a project that could reshape Madrid’s international profile and bring a new kind of energy to Formula 1’s expanding global calendar.
