Paddy Lowe predicts Hamilton’s Ferrari move will energize the team, likening it to Mansell’s iconic switch in 1989.
Paddy Lowe, former executive director of Mercedes F1, is convinced that Lewis Hamilton will be a tremendous asset for Ferrari next year. The engineer compares his arrival to that of Nigel Mansell in the late 1980s.
“I think he’ll bring a lot to the team, and the team will bring a lot to him,” said the former engineer. “I congratulate them for securing him, and I wish both of them great success.”
“The last transfer I can recall that was somewhat similar was when Nigel joined Ferrari while I was at Williams. He was nicknamed ‘Il Leone,’ and it was a huge moment. You remember the star he became there. He fought with that car to achieve incredible results.”
Two years later, Mansell returned to Williams, and Lowe remembers it having a very positive effect on the team: “I recall when Nigel came back, which was also a great moment. The whole factory was uplifted when the announcement was made.”
“I think we could see the same effect with Ferrari. When you have a driver of Lewis’s caliber, an exceptional driver in every respect, coming to work and drive your car—and I say this considering Nigel’s effect at Williams—it psychologically boosts the team.”
“Lewis, undeniably, is a phenomenon. On one hand, you think, ‘Wow! This is someone who will maximize my work, who will push this car to its limits. It’s as fast as it can be.'”
“On the other hand, everyone feels the pressure and knows they have to rise to the challenge and seize the opportunity. People step up when they realize they’re going to have one of the greatest drivers of all time in their car. I think it all works in synergy.”
