Cadillac F1 is eyeing seven or eight drivers for its 2026 lineup, with discussions still at an early stage, says Graeme Lowdon.
Cadillac F1 has already identified a preliminary list of potential drivers for its debut season in Formula 1 in 2026.
Team Principal Graeme Lowdon confirmed the number of candidates and clarified that discussions are still in the early stages.
“We’ve considered or spoken to about seven or eight drivers in total,” Lowdon told Speed City. “It’s no surprise that anyone with recent Formula 1 experience is included on that list.”
However, Lowdon emphasized that the discussions are still very much in their infancy.
“At the moment, we’re simply trying to gauge people’s interest, motivations, and those kinds of things. We’re definitely not in advanced discussions with any driver just yet.”
He also pointed out the variety of experience among the potential candidates.
“There are plenty of drivers with extensive experience, not just those who’ve been part of championship-winning teams or have taken race victories,” he continued.
“But we also have younger drivers with experience, which offers another angle. And there are promising drivers who haven’t had a Grand Prix start yet but have shown their potential in junior formulas.”
“Considering we weren’t able to be active in the recent driver market, we’re actually in a pretty strong position to form a solid driver lineup for 2026.”
Lowdon reiterated that driver selection will be based on merit, expressing confidence that all the drivers they’re currently in talks with are highly capable of leading a professional F1 team.
“We’ve said many times that the selection will be made on merit, and I’m happy to say that all the drivers we’re having preliminary discussions with are more than capable of driving a professional F1 team.”
While the team remains committed to selecting drivers based on merit, they also want to have at least one driver from the same nationality as the manufacturer.
As such, they are keeping a close eye on IndyCar’s Colton Herta, and Lowdon confirmed that Jak Crawford could also be a contender, depending on how his Formula 2 season progresses.
“Colton has obviously started his IndyCar season. He wasn’t too lucky in the first race, I’d say, but he drove very well and finished fourth in the latest race. We’re, of course, very interested to see how Jak develops in Formula 2. The first round in Melbourne was a bit disrupted,” Lowdon said.
“As we’ve mentioned before, I think everyone expects a Formula 1 team to select drivers based on merit, and that’s exactly what we’ll do. But, as we’ve often said, there’s nothing to say we won’t have one or more American drivers at some point.”
