Leclerc compensates for Ferrari’s flaws by pushing his car to its absolute limits.
Frédéric Vasseur is not yet prepared to worry about Ferrari’s results or Charles Leclerc’s recent errors. The Scuderia boss believes that the Monegasque’s weekend at Silverstone was complicated by trials with a different specification on Friday, attributing the errors to the car’s lack of performance.
“We must first avoid trying to draw a general conclusion from what happened,” Vasseur stated. “We need to look into this thoroughly. I believe that in the last two races, the car was not easy to drive. It demanded a lot from the drivers, especially for Charles who had a new package on Friday.”
“He needs to jump into the car. We didn’t do FP3 in the wet, and he had to go into qualifying with a car he had never driven before. He was in very good shape until turn 13. I don’t know if we’ve discussed it together, he was faster than [George] Russell until turn 13.”
“But I think we were really at the limit of the car, and the car was not easy to drive in those conditions, which means we may make more errors than when it is under control. And it’s true that as soon as we have a bad dynamic, or let’s say it like that, there is a feeling that we need to compensate.”
The Frenchman elaborates on the problem when a driver and team are pushing the limits: “It’s a mistake by the team, the drivers, everyone, because we cannot compensate. Fundamentally, you have to be at the limit. That means if something goes slightly wrong, you cannot do more than what you were doing before.”
