Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc celebrates a monumental win at his home race in Monaco, fulfilling a lifelong dream with an emotional and hard-fought victory.
Charles Leclerc has broken the Monaco curse, triumphing at his home race on Sunday after starting from pole position. This marks his first victory since the 2022 Austrian Grand Prix, and he is thrilled to have accomplished this feat in front of his home crowd after numerous previous disappointments.
“It’s such a tough race, and starting from pole makes it even sweeter. It was a dream that made me want to become a Formula 1 driver. It was emotionally challenging because, in the last 15 laps, you just hope nothing goes wrong. The emotions were overwhelming; I thought about my father more than usual, and he gave everything for me to get here. It was our dream, and it’s incredible,” Leclerc said after the race.
When asked about his race management, Leclerc admitted he had to work hard to manage his tyres while keeping his rivals at bay but praised Ferrari for the performance of his car: “It’s really tough. At the start, we had a gap, but we had to do 78 laps on the same tyres, which was very difficult.”
“We Managed the Tyres Very Well”
“We managed the tyres very well, which was a big part of the race because we had to control the gap to George [Russell]. Towards the end, I was able to push harder in the last 10 laps, and the car was incredible. I want to thank the team for doing an amazing job over the past few months, and it’s a special feeling that they gave me the opportunity to win here.”
The Monegasque driver also had a word for his fans: “A huge thank you, the drivers’ parade was special. I saw many friends and familiar faces on the balconies, and it was special. This victory is very important, as is the support I’ve had all weekend. Thank you, everyone.”
Fred Vasseur, Ferrari’s team principal, commented on his driver: “It might not have been the most exciting race for you, but it was very tense for us. I am very happy for Charles. Those aren’t tears in my eyes, you know, it’s champagne.”
