Leclerc views Verstappen’s aggression as natural but praises the FIA’s essential role in maintaining fair racing boundaries.
Charles Leclerc deems the penalties imposed on Max Verstappen last weekend in Mexico as justified following his manoeuvres against Lando Norris. Nevertheless, the Ferrari driver isn’t surprised that the three-time world champion is taking every measure possible in the fight for the title.
“The second move on Lando, I think that’s beyond the limit,” Leclerc stated. “I also think that anyone in his position might do the same, because we’re all competing for a world championship, and I think it would be naive to suggest drivers would behave differently today.”
The Monegasque has a theory on Verstappen’s increasingly aggressive defensive approach, though it’s worth noting that the triple world champion had previously forced Lando Norris off the track in Austria.
“He thinks his car isn’t as strong as it was at the start of the season. He believes McLaren currently has very good momentum and that they’re all competing for the drivers’ title.”
“It’s challenging. At times, he goes beyond the limit, as he did in Mexico. But once again, they’re fighting for a world championship. I think it’s understandable. It’s then up to the FIA to monitor and set boundaries for what is acceptable. And on that front, we’re all working to make it as fair as possible.”
Carlos Sainz hopes Verstappen has learned from his penalties, though the Dutchman’s comments in yesterday’s press conference and his past behaviour suggest otherwise: “It’s not surprising in a way, because he’s fighting for a lot and knows he’s lagging in terms of performance.”
“He’s doing everything he can to minimise his points deficit. At the same time, I believe this double 10-second penalty was a message from the stewards, saying, ‘we’re watching what you’re doing, and we want to keep the competition for the title fair and sportsmanlike.’”
“I think he understood that message and knows there are limits in this sport because, in the end, one can pay the price. I truly hope they have a memorable and fair fight for the title, one we’ll look back on with respect, and that they’ll deliver an entertaining spectacle.”
