Leclerc Settles for P2 After Narrow Pole Miss in Monaco

Charles Leclerc missed out on Monaco GP pole to Lando Norris, settling for second after traffic spoiled his final Q3 lap.

Leclerc thought he had done the hardest part by matching Lando Norris’ time at the end of Q3 in Monaco, but the McLaren F1 driver ultimately clinched pole. The Monegasque is understandably disappointed but will still start from the front row with his Ferrari.

“There’s always something you can do better, but in the end, this was the best we could do. The lap was very good. The first lap was slightly off the pace, just to build confidence for the second one,” said Leclerc.

“I could have done it, but I hit traffic — I’m obviously very frustrated. We know we don’t have the car to win this year, but this weekend the car is good, and starting from second, it’s going to be tough to go for the win.”

Asked about why he’s so comfortable in Monaco, where he already has several pole positions and a win, Leclerc explained that his strong form is a mix of racing in front of his home crowd and the track layout.

“I don’t know, I generally like street circuits, I like qualifying and pushing to the absolute limit. Sometimes it pays off, sometimes it doesn’t, but I’m proud of the result we achieved today. On paper, it was going to be tough for us, and in the end, it’s not bad.”
