Starting fourth, Charles Leclerc doubted a win at Monza, but strategic brilliance secured a nostalgic victory for Ferrari.
Starting fourth on the grid, Charles Leclerc was initially sceptical about his chances of victory at the Italian Grand Prix. However, with a one-stop strategy, he managed to overtake the two McLaren F1 drivers and clinched a home win for Ferrari. He confesses to feeling as emotional as during his first triumph at Monza in 2019.
“It’s an incredible feeling. The first time was special, and I wasn’t sure if a second time would feel the same, but it does. The emotions, my goodness… in the last laps, like in 2019, I found myself looking at the stands, which is risky, but it’s incredible,” remarked Leclerc, delighted with his victories at Monaco and Monza this year.
“This is Monza, I want to win here every year! I aim to win as many races as possible, and to secure the championship as quickly as possible. But these are the two most special races of the year and to have won both, it’s special.”
When asked whether Ferrari could replicate this success consistently towards the end of the season, the Monegasque remains cautious about McLaren’s level, but is pleased with the progress made and hopeful for good results at the next race.
“I don’t know, because it worked well at a circuit like Monza and I’m not sure if it will be the same elsewhere. McLaren is the favourite but we’ve made a step forward. Baku is a circuit I like and have been successful at in the past, so I’m hopeful for strong results there.”
