Leclerc Reflects on Ferrari's Emotional Challenges and Growth

Emotional Ties Test Ferrari’s Resilience, Says Leclerc

Charles Leclerc addresses Ferrari’s emotional dynamics, highlighting how passion can amplify challenges while driving progress within the team.

Charles Leclerc gave a positive assessment of his 2024 season in a year-end interview. The Ferrari driver is even pleased that his team faced challenging moments throughout the season, allowing for greater progress by the end of the year.

“Looking back, I’m satisfied with the season,” Leclerc told The New York Times. “I think it’s rare for me to reflect and feel like I missed very few opportunities.”

“There was a performance dip after Monaco for two or three races when we introduced an upgrade that didn’t work as expected, and we had to push the car into areas we didn’t want to. But we had to learn something from that situation.”

“We’re in the position we are today because we went through those two or three races. I wouldn’t change that, and I think we made the right decision as a team. So, putting everything together, I think the season was positive.”

“I think, ultimately, we lacked performance, especially at the start of the season, to compete for better results. But I believe the team did a very good job maximizing what we had.”

However, the Monegasque driver remains uncertain about Ferrari’s standing relative to its direct rivals: “That’s a very difficult question to answer because, ultimately, Formula 1 is a relative sport.”

“We can only know what we’re doing ourselves. I’m confident that we’re doing everything right at the moment and that, as a team, we’re much stronger. I’m not necessarily referring to the technical side.”

“Because, once again, everything is relative, and we don’t know if Red Bull or McLaren have focused on next year’s car and found something very special for it. So, it’s very hard to say anything about that. We’re focusing on ourselves and trying to do the best job possible.”

Leclerc has unwavering confidence in his team, but he explains that the emotional involvement of Scuderia employees has sometimes been a challenge: “I think, however, that the mindset within the team and the way we work are much better, and we are a much stronger team.”

“I’ve always said that Ferrari is incredible because there’s so much passion within the team, and that’s amazing because everyone is willing to work an extra hour and is truly motivated to make things better.”

“However, when things go wrong, the people working at Ferrari are more affected because they have an emotional attachment to the brand, which might be less the case in other teams.”

“That said, I feel we’ve taken a step forward. There’s still passion, of course, but we’re much less emotionally affected by what’s happening around the team, which I think is very positive.”
